European Union weighs imposing tariffs on US
Officials involved in the preparations said the potential measures are being crafted to provide European leaders with negotiating leverage ahead of key meetings with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos next week.
The EU had originally prepared the tariff list last year but kept it on hold until February 6 to avoid sparking a trade war. However, following the recent escalation of tensions over Greenland, representatives of EU member states discussed reactivating the measures on Sunday, alongside considering the use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument, which could limit U.S. firms’ access to the European market.
The move follows a joint statement issued by eight countries directly affected by Trump’s proposed tariffs—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom—declaring "full solidarity" with Denmark and Greenland.
On social media Saturday, Trump stated that the United States would impose a 10-percent tariff from February 1 on goods from the eight countries. He warned that the rate would increase to 25 percent on June 1 and remain until a deal is reached for the "complete and total purchase" of Greenland.
Trump, scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum on Wednesday and Thursday, is expected to hold private discussions with European leaders, including the head of the European Commission, and participate in a meeting with Western nations supporting Ukraine.
