Germany completes initial troop deployment to Greenland

(MENAFN) Germany has completed its initial deployment of 15 soldiers to Greenland, a German Armed Forces spokesperson, Lt. Col. Peter Milevchuk, told Funke media group. He described the cooperation with Danish forces as “positive and constructive.”

The deployment followed Denmark’s announcement on Wednesday of a military exercise on the island. Several European countries, including Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the UK, participated, each sending between one and 15 personnel. The exercise came after talks between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States ended in what officials called a “fundamental disagreement” between Washington and its European allies over the autonomous territory.

“The results of the reconnaissance will be analyzed in the coming days,” Milevchuk said, noting that the German team had successfully completed its mission.

In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump has intensified efforts to acquire Greenland, a goal he has pursued since his first term. He argues that taking control of the island is vital for US national security to counter Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic, claims that both Beijing and Moscow have rejected.

Trump has repeatedly ridiculed Denmark’s military presence on Greenland, suggesting it is insufficient to defend the world’s largest island and joking that it relies on “two dog sleds.” He further escalated tensions earlier this week by announcing new tariffs on US trading partners that do not support his Greenland acquisition plan.
